In South Africa, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women (23%) and a staggering 10%  of these were in women 20-40. Even though the odds are lower for young women, in Africa the average age is younger than in US and Europe.  In South Africa, around half of women diagnosed with breast cancer are estimated to survive five years.

Earlier diagnosis and early spread of breast cancer improve patients’ chances of survival. However, young women may not get a diagnosis right away because they only start having regular mammogram screenings until age 45 or 50.

It’s also harder for doctors to find breast cancer in young women than in older women because younger women have denser breasts with more breast tissue than fat tissue.

Tumours don’t show up as well on mammograms in women with dense breasts. Cancer is not considered a young adult disease.

Join us to learn about some of the unique challenges young women with breast cancer face and discuss some challenges you face.
